Everyone Practices Cafeteria Religion
I’ve learnt a lot from the few years I spent in college. I was thousands of miles away from home, in a city where a different culture and different races of people were living. I shared a room with a boy from Mexico and ate from the college cafeteria. The food there was bland and an Indian like me could never be happy with it! However, over the years I learnt that under any circumstances; the choice of settling in was ours! We just had to be compassionate and love those closer to us. As for the cafeteria food…I learnt to choose the right food with my kind of spices!
The year showed me beyond a doubt that everyone practices cafeteria religion... But the important lesson was this: there's nothing wrong with choosing. Cafeterias aren't bad per se... the key is in choosing the right dishes. You need to pick the nurturing ones (compassion), the healthy ones (love thy neighbor), not the bitter ones.
